A Colorful Culture

Salvador is a very culturally diverse and colorful city, from the brightly painted Portuguese colonial Baroque style buildings in the historic center of the city, or Pelhourinho (Portuguese for whipping post—at one time the area of the city where enslaved Africans were punished), to the many cultural and religious festivals, traditional clothing, and street art.
